Kosher / Halal food options

Kosher and Halal certifications work differently. Kosher restaurants are inspected an certified as a whole. But just the meat products are certified for halal dining, so a restaurant can have halal and non-halal options side by side, and you would just (for example) order the beef bacon, instead of the pork bacon. There will usually be a sticker in the window that says they purchase halal meat products.

Here is a listing of Kosher certified restaurants in Philadelphia, tagged by which supervision did their certification. (list)

For Halal dining, I recommend the area of Walnut Street between 43rd and 45th (sometimes called Little Lebanon). On 43rd, you have 2 markets, both of which sell prepared food – Makkah Market (website) (map) and the newer Alrayyan Food Market (website) (map). And on 45th, you have Manakeesh Cafe Bakery & Grill (website) (map), Saad’s (website) (map), and a Yemeni restaurant called either Hadramout or Alsaeeda (both names are on the awning) (menu images) (map). There are also many Halal food trucks around campus – they are all pretty similar to each other and their food is pretty tasty.
